MD 223 still ends along the former route, leaving what would otherwise be an inexplicable 'dead end' in a numbering sense.

Most of this route is now 4 or 6 lane divided; the main drag for traffic in the area near the Patuxent Naval Air Station. Yes, Hollywood and California are real towns about 4 miles apart along 235. The road's name comes from an colonial era law which mandated a road that led to a ferry be marked with three notches on a tree trunk along the route. The whereabouts of this ferry are lost in the mists of time. MD 235 is the longest intra-county state route.

The routes 235-252 all lie within St. Mary's County or once did.
